SURVEYING
Photogrammetry and feature collection
Overview
A 2D ortho mosaic map can be processed and used on AutoCAD for identifying points and features. By using photogrammetry, the time to collect features can be reduced by up to ten times. For example, a roadway that may take two days done on foot could take more or less than two hours with aerial mapping.
Onsite Process
Using the drones RTK feature and the gps base station, we are able to arrive onsite and carry out a pre-planned mission. Once the mission is started the drone will take off and collect a number of photos each with a precise gps location. Once the drone has completed the mission, it will return to home and the processing stage will begin. With specific processing software, the pictures captured will be arranged into a 2D model. Before this process can be carried out, the surveying team will need to capture points to align the 2D model.
Benefit and downfall
Often during a traditional capture of the features, there are times when one can be missed. With a gps accurate 2D model, nothing is forgotten. The only downside is clarity, the camera has a high resolution, but imaging can only go so far. Reading small writing, identifying underground utilities, and small objects can be difficult or impossible. Most importantly, time is valuable and the greatest benefit is speed and accuracy. In places with a large number of features, drone capture has a chance to shine. Overall, the efficiency of ortho mosaic mapping is at a high level and can produce quality data.
